Sustainability Framework for County Cricket

Project Summary

Hampshire Country Cricket Club was keen to understand how the organisation could operate in a more sustainable manner, not least on match days when thousands of visitors come to the Ageas Bowl stadium, and needed help in producing a framework for future action.

Our project initially focused on speaking to a range of stakeholders at the Club to understand current behaviours and any barriers to positive change, but also on the collection of quantitative data for Scope 1 and Scope 2 emissions calculations. With all this information we were able to generate a roadmap for HCCC which included a range of recommendations across the different pillars of sustainability.

Cricket has already shown its vulnerabilities as an international sport to the impact of climate change: there have already been pitches flooded in Bangladesh, matches abandoned because of poor air quality in Australia, and ex-captain of England, Joe Root, being hospitalised after on-pitch temperatures in Australia reached 57.6°c.
